At 6:53 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting on the 100 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.
Officers found Nasir Dudley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Stephens and Fragé said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:43 p.m., Stephens and Fragé said.
The investigation is active and ongoing and no arrests have been made, Stephens and Fragé said.
Longtime Morris County resident Brett Smith, 53, died April 8 after a “brief but torturous” battle with mental illness, his obituary says.
Described as a “Morristown guy through and through,” Smith graduated from the district and went on to pursue his dream of “becoming a star,” according to his memorial.

Mamaroneck resident Mary Soto, age 62, was arrested on Thursday, Dec. 14, months after resigning from her position as business manager at the Mamaroneck Public Library, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office announced.
According to the DA's Office, between May 2016 and February 2023, Soto stole around $44,769 from the library's bank accounts in the form of credit card and recurring debit transactions. She would then use these funds for personal expenses, officials said.
